A 73-year-old British-Czechoslovakian national, a passenger on a cruise ship, tragically lost her life in a jet ski accident in the Bahamas, according to authorities.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that the incident occurred on Saturday, March 22, at Half Moon Cay. Officials on Eleuthera Island were notified by the island manager shortly after 1 p.m. local time.
“Upon arrival,” the police statement read, “officers conducted their initial investigation, which revealed that the female passenger lost control of the jet ski and collided with a rock, resulting in the accident.”
Despite receiving medical attention, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor.
Holland America Line, the cruise company, confirmed the passenger’s identity in a statement:
“Holland America Line regrets to confirm that a passenger onboard Nieuw Amsterdam passed away following a tragic incident on a personal watercraft,” the statement read. “The guest, a 73-year-old woman, died on March 22 while the ship was calling at Half Moon Cay, The Bahamas.”
The company added, “We are in contact with the guest’s family and doing everything we can to support them during this difficult time. The accident is currently being investigated by Bahamian authorities. Out of respect for the family, we do not have further information to share.”
Half Moon Cay, a private island owned by Holland America Line, is described on the company’s website as a crescent-shaped retreat featuring “white-sand beaches, a turquoise lagoon, and untouched nature.” Popular activities for guests include snorkeling, kayaking, and nature walks.
